Thursday 20 November is World Social Enterprise Day, a global celebration of businesses that exist to create positive change.
So what exactly is a social enterprise?
There is not a legal definition in Australia, but the one we use at Greatest Good is that a social enterprise:
- Has a clear social, environmental or community purpose that benefits the public
- Earns the majority of its income through trade, rather than grants or donations
- Reinvests profits to further its mission and create lasting impact
In simple terms: if a charity and a business had a baby, it would be a social enterprise. These are purpose-driven organisations using the power of business to tackle the issues that government and traditional business often overlook, from social inclusion and employment pathways to climate action and community wellbeing.
At Greatest Good, we are proud to be a social enterrpise and also proud to partner with incredible social enterprises across Australia who prove that business can be both ethical and impactful. Every transaction drives social, environmental and communtiy change.
